After retirement Earl moved his family to Arlington, TX and continued his instructor roll at Ling-Tempco Vaught and later at Chaparral Steel Company in Midlothian, TX. Throughout his career with the Air Force, Earl worked as an instructor and supervisor in the field of hydraulics and airplane maintenance, which included the Titan I and Titan II inter-continental missile programs. Other tours of duty included Selfridge AFB, MI, where daughter Donna was born, George AFB, CA, and ultimately back to Sheppard AFB where he retired from military service in 1969. During their stay in Japan, son David was born. Three of five children, Stephen, Wade, and Diane were born before leaving Sheppard AFB in 1954 for Komaki Air Base in Japan. While stationed at Sheppard AFB, TX Earl graduated from A & E School with honors, earning an instructor position at the school. After returning home he completed high school, graduating from South Division High in Milwaukee, WI before joining the U.S. Army and spent most of his three year enlistment in Germany. Just before his 18th birthday he joined the U.S. At the age of 16, during World War II, Earl joined the Merchant Marines and served in the North Atlantic. The son of Peter and Leila Engelhardt, he was born on Augin New Berlin, WI. She was a protector of the weak and a defender of the down trodden. Jonna was a Licensed Practical Nurse and had a calling for the care of the elderly in geriatric nursing. She would often say, “Don’t criticize a man until you have walked a mile in his shoes.” Don’t you wish we would all embrace that motto in our lives. She had an empathy toward people that could only be rooted in a relationship with Christ. She was a woman of strength, courage, and faith who raised her five children with love and a passion for life. She was born on Main Duncan, Oklahoma and spent the majority of her life in Stephens County. Jonna Lois (Love) Wilson, mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, nurse, and friend took her heavenly flight on December 16, 2017. They also collected aluminum cans and all the profits made would go to local charities such as Toys For Tots, D.A.R.E. They collected and repaired bicycles to give to children at Christmas. Lark and Verby were well known and greatly admired in the community. Lark was a licensed Broker and Real Estate Agent. He also served on the Board of the Christian Helping Hands. He served on the board of the Stephens County Christmas Dinner, which fed close to 1,400 people this past Christmas. He took great pride in being able to help honor a fellow veteran. He was a charter member of the Stephens County Combined Honor Guard. Lark was a member of Ray of Hope Church, and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 258, where he had served as Commander and also Vice Commander. They came to Comanche in 1954, and in 1955 they opened up Lark’s Dairy Inn, which they ran for more than thirty-five years. He and Verby Dove were united in marriage on Octoin Wichita Falls, TX. Lark proudly served his country in the United States Army, including service in Korea. Lark was born Apin Marlow, to Isaac and Ettie “Seely” Kirkpatrick.
